Tulum is one of those areas where you need to know where to go to get good Mexican food. You’re not going to find authentic Mexican food on Tulum beach unfortunately. To eat the best Mexican food in Tulum, you’ll need to head to Tulum town. This post will give you some of my personal favorites for the best Tulum food. While you’re in Mexico, make sure you also leave time to try the diversity of Mexican drinks during your travels.
El Camello Jr.
El Camello Jr. is one of my favorite favorites in Tulum. The food is so good! The ceviche is honestly one of the best I’ve ever had. Everything tastes so fresh. I recently ordered the garlic fish dish and it was amazing. It’s a local spot and El Camello Jr. is one I highly recommend.
Bretzel Bakery
On the side of a main road, this might not seem like a taco spot by the name but it has some of the best tacos I had in Tulum. Try the tacos al pastor with cheese, tinga poblana (pulled pork), or mole verde (chicken in green sauce). They also have a sauce station where you can add all of the sauces to your tacos and it’s perfection. The best part is they are only $35MXN or $1.50 USD for each taco!
Chiapaneca
This is another popular local spot with great tacos, tortas, sopes, quesadillas and tostadas. Try the al pastor tacos with cheese, chicken tacos, and the tostada. I had a tostada with chicken and liked it so much that I ordered another one.
El Sabor de Las Cazuelas
El Sabor de Laz Cazuelas is another local spot on the main road in Tulum town. This is another great spot for tacos. Try the tacos al pastor with cheese, asada (steak), and the quesadillas. They also have an area to add delicious toppings and salsa to your tacos.
Don Cafeto
Don Cafeto is another popular spot for authentic Mexican food. There is a large variety on their menu from tacos, soups, enchiladas, main dishes, etc. I ordered the chicken enchiladas, chicken soup and a papaya drink. My favorite was probably the little tortilla that came with my enchiladas with a black bean topping. So good. If you’re in the best for some great Tulum food, head to Don Cafeto.
Pepe’s Best Tacos
This is a small food stand in the middle of la Veleta neighborhood in Tulum. There is always a long line and for good reason. Pepe has great tacos and a toppings section to add to your tacos. My favorites are al pastor with cheese tacos, shrimp tacos, and their pina juice.
Pozoleria la Mexicanita
This place was recommended to me by a local. It’s a few minutes drive from the main road in Tulum town and they have pozole, sopes, quesadillas. Pozole is a traditional Mexican soup with meat and can be topped off with shredded lettuce, radishes, onion, garlic, etc. The waiter recommended the chicken pozole and it was so good.
Burrito Amor
While this one might not be as traditional as the others, the burritos were so good that I can’t miss adding it to the list. Try to the rib-eye steak burrito and you will not be disappointed!
